As a result, I've found that in my time driving those 2400 miles, my mind was wandering around my ideas quite a bit.. and I've happened upon two nearly fully formed story-lines.
One is a dystopian sort of technology run amok thing.. and the other is a more natural history/fantasy series.
I really sorta like both.. (obviously or I wouldn't have thought them through that far), but I'm stuck as to which to undertake as a writing project first at this point.
I've been working on the History/Fantasy thing the longest.. it's got parts of stuff I did years ago. But I'm really sort of into the dystopian story right now, and it seems like Dystopian is the 'hot topic' these days when it comes to popular stories.. so I keep wavering back and forth.
Anyway.. sorta nice to finally be settled enough to get back into the writing frame of mind.

The Kill Order by James Dashner
My rating: 2 of 5 stars
Well.. every author has due a dud now and then. I think Dashner bit off too much trying to think of a plausible means of starting 'The Flare'.. and this was the result.
There are some good points, obviously. You don't get as successful as he is without knowing how to string together some good parts, but to me this was like reading the screen play to Omega Man.
Problem is.. I didn't really like Omega Man.. so I guess that explains my ranking.
I still like Dashner very much, and will be looking forward to his future books.. but much like Brandon Mull's "Beyonders' series.. you don't always hit a home run, but you don't throw the author out with the bathwater. :)

Insurgent by Veronica Roth
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Well.. no sequel is ever as good as the first, and this falls into that category. Still a very good book, with an interesting 'twist' that is foreshadowed but not enough to make it overly obvious.
I did have that 'A-ha' moment towards the end where I thought, "She must have been watching 'The Village' when she thought of where to take this storyline.
All in all, a worthy read. What Veronica Roth does so well that I enjoy is her action and pacing are well written, at least for me as a reader. I enjoy reading stories that grab me and keep me in their grip, and this book, while not overly taxing, did that. I read it in about 4 hours or so, which is usually a good sign.
If you liked the first, you owe it to yourself to continue the journey. If you're on the fence.. it was good enough for me to finish the trilogy when the next book comes out, so my advice would be to take the plunge.

Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.
We are alive and well here in Harrisonburg, VA. We arrived on the 1st and have been in various stages of unpacking and getting lost in the surrounding area. My office is.. frankly buried under boxes and boxes of everything from electrical cords and old modems to blankets and clothing.
Things are, however, beginning to take on some small form of normalcy.
We're pretty much broke already.. so we've slipped back into that uncomfortable 'full-time student' mode without really missing much of a beat. Only difference is we've added 3 kids since the last time either one of us were full-time students.
I've been swamped, it seems, with little repairs on the house. It seems there wasn't much done in the way of cleaning before we moved in.. my wife has already painted one room, and has designs on at least 2 others.. assuming we can afford paint again anytime soon.
She has also cleaned the carpets in 2 rooms, and the difference is scarily obvious. The house we live in is older.. but not without some charm. Our backyard is tremendous, and the location is honestly unbeatable. The house just needs to be scrubbed from top to bottom and hung out to dry. :(
Yet another reason why moving just sucks.. =P
On the positive side.. after weeks of feeling burnt out on writing, the desire is taking hold again.. and I've had a new storyline come into focus.. giving me 2 different complete storylines I've got rattling around in my head that need to get down on paper.
Now.. to find the time. lol
